The Problem
A Lot Full of Inventory.
And No Real Deterrent.

Like most dealerships, Iowa City Auto Group had cameras — but they were the passive kind. Record-only systems that captured footage after the fact. Great for filing an insurance claim. Not great for stopping anything.

Over 18 months, the lot saw a pattern: late-night trespassers cutting through the property, attempted vehicle break-ins, catalytic converter theft on the service side, and one incident where a car was vandalized sitting on the showroom lot overnight. The cameras caught all of it in grainy detail. Nothing was recovered. Nobody was caught.

The owner put it plainly: “We knew who was out there. We just couldn’t do anything about it until it was already too late.”

⚠ Passive-Only Cameras

Existing system recorded but never responded. No audio, no light output, no warning of any kind. Trespassers knew the cameras were there — and didn’t care.

⚠ No After-Hours Deterrence

The lot went unmonitored from close of business until open. A six-plus hour window with no active security presence and no way to interrupt suspicious activity in real time.

⚠ High-Value, High-Exposure Inventory

New and used vehicles sitting in open-air rows overnight. Catalytic converters, wheels, and interior electronics made every car a target for someone willing to move fast in the dark.

⚠ False Alarm Fatigue

A previous motion-sensor system triggered so frequently on wind, animals, and passing headlights that staff stopped responding to alerts entirely. The system became background noise.

The Solution
UNV Tri-Guard
Built to Be Seen and Heard.

Fusion Security specified the UNV IPC2B14SE Tri-Guard bullet camera for this install — purpose-built for active deterrence rather than passive recording. The philosophy: stop the threat before it becomes an incident.

The Tri-Guard earns its name from three layers of active response built directly into the camera body — IR night vision, full-color warm light illumination, and a built-in speaker with microphone for two-way audio and automated warnings. When something trips detection, the camera doesn’t just record. It reacts.

Eight cameras were deployed across the lot — vehicle rows, service drive entrance, rear fence line, and both exits. Each camera configured with custom detection zones matched to the property’s actual traffic patterns. Connected to the client’s existing PoE network with no new cabling runs required.

How It Works
The System Doesn’t Wait
For You to React.

Most security systems are reactive — store footage, send an alert after it’s already happened. The Tri-Guard is built around a different model: detect, illuminate, warn, and document — in that order, automatically.

1

Detection — Human or Vehicle Classified

The onboard AI detects motion and immediately classifies the target. Person or vehicle where there shouldn’t be one — it flags it. Cat on the lot, headlights sweeping the fence — it ignores it. No alert. No false alarm. Classification happens in under a second on the camera hardware itself.

AI Classification — Human / Vehicle / Non-Motor Vehicle
2

Illumination — The Lot Lights Up

The warm white floodlight built into the camera activates instantly. In pitch-black conditions, it throws 40 meters of full-color light — turning a dark corner into a fully visible scene. A person who thought they were in darkness is now standing under a spotlight. Most people leave at this step.

Warm Light Illumination — Up to 40m / 131ft
3

Audio Warning — Automated or Live

The built-in speaker fires a pre-recorded warning customized to the client. For Iowa City Auto Group: they’re on private property, they’re being recorded, the footage is monitored. The dual-mic array also enables live two-way audio — staff can speak directly through the camera in real time.

4

Scheduled Arming — Set It and Walk Away

The deterrence sequence runs on a configurable timer. Set to arm automatically at closing and disarm at opening — no manual activation required. During business hours: standard recording. After close: full active-deterrence mode. Every night, automatically, without anyone touching anything.

5

Recording — Full Evidence Package

From the moment detection fires, a full 4MP event clip is captured — sharp enough to read plates and identify faces at distance. Stored on the NVR and accessible via the EZStation app on mobile or desktop. Everything documented, timestamped, and retrievable for a police report, insurance claim, or routine review.

💡

A Note on Deterrence — What the Camera Actually Does

The Tri-Guard system does not contact law enforcement. It is not a monitored alarm and does not dispatch police on its own. What it does is change the environment the moment a threat appears. Sudden light, a verbal warning, and a camera actively responding all communicate one thing: this property is not a soft target. Most opportunistic crime depends on low risk and low visibility. The Tri-Guard eliminates both.

The Results
Twelve Months.
Zero Incidents.

In the twelve months following installation, Iowa City Auto Group has not reported a single after-hours security incident. No vandalism, no break-in attempts, no catalytic converter theft. The system triggered its deterrence sequence dozens of times — and in each case, the individual left without escalation.

“The first week it was on, it went off three times. Every time, whoever it was just walked off. That’s it. We haven’t had a single problem since. It basically pays for itself every month we don’t file a claim.”

— General Manager, Iowa City Auto Group

The ROI conversation is straightforward. A single catalytic converter replacement runs $1,500–$3,500. One vandalism claim, one broken window, one stolen set of wheels — any single event likely exceeds the cost of the entire system. The Tri-Guard doesn’t just protect inventory. It removes the property from the mental list of easy targets entirely.
